Understanding oHFM in One Article: Why Does the FPGA Industry Need an Open Harmonized Module Standard?

oHFM Official News

What is oHFM

oHFM stands for Open Harmonized FPGA Module, an open FPGA hardware modularization specification for industrial, medical, communications, automotive electronics, aerospace and other fields. It defines the mechanical dimensions, electrical interfaces and software adaptation layer of FPGA core modules, aiming to make FPGA core modules from different vendors truly plug-and-play.

Three Major Pain Points of Traditional FPGA Development

  1. Overly Long Development Cycles: from schematic design, PCB prototyping and hardware debugging to mass production, customers typically need 12-18 months, easily missing market windows

  2. Poor Design Reusability: hardware designs across different products and projects are completely non-transferable, requiring repeated heavy hardware R&D investment for every project

  3. High Supply Chain Risk: dependence on a single FPGA vendor, lead times exceeding half a year, volatile pricing, and almost no bargaining power for small-batch customers

What oHFM Changes

oHFM turns the most critical computing, storage and high-speed interface parts of an FPGA into standardized modules. Customers only need to design their own business carrier boards and directly select standard modules:

  • Hardware development cycle shortened from 18 months to 3 months

  • Overall hardware cost reduced by 40%-60%

  • FPGA modules from different vendors and process nodes can be seamlessly swapped, greatly reducing supply chain risk

  • Unified software layer: algorithms developed once run on all compatible modules without repeated porting

Applicable Fields

The oHFM standard has already been deployed across 5G/6G communications SDR, aerospace radar, industrial machine vision, medical imaging, edge AI, quantum computing control and more, helping customers across industries rapidly bring FPGA products to market and dramatically lowering the barrier to FPGA adoption.
